What is CNGI
CNGI means China Next Generation Internet
Birth of CNGI
CNGI can be traced back to the end of 2001. At that time, 57 academics of Chinese Academy of science and Chinese Academy of Engineering wrote a letter to the leaders of State Council stating that they propose to construct the next generation academic Internet.
In August, 2002 , National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) organized a strategic experts committee for the Next Generation Internet development. In August, 2003, the group submitted the strategic research and implementation report for the CNGI to the relevant supervising department.
After the authorization of major leaders of State Council, this state-class network project of science and research was initiated. And CNGI was then launched formally . The national ministries provide great support to CNGI.
The 8 ministries unite to organize the CNGI project. NDRC is the leading ministry and the other ministries include Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Ministry of Education (MOE), Ministry of Information Industry (MII), the State Council Information Office (SCIO), Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).
Task of CNGI
Constructing China next generation Internet backbones
Developing key network technology and major applications for the next generation Internet
Promoting industrialization and application deployment of the next generation Internet equipments and software
Participating in related international organization, deploying international cooperation, and playing important role in standards setting.
Traits of CNGI
The network architecture and technology to support QoS is stressed by CNGI toward a target of manageable of IP network.
Wireless and mobile service is also the focal point of CNGI.
CNGI attaches importance to the technology that promotes NGI and NGN convergence, facilitating a manageable network.
CNGI develops network hardware, software and application to support NGI and possible used to NGN.
CNGI Backbones
CNGI network is the base platform for the development of China next generation Internet, consists of network backbones and access network.
In August, 2003, presided by NDRC, Network Backbones Constructing Project of CNGI initiated via open bidding.
In November, 2003, NDRC approved the feasible research paper of the Network Backbones Construction Project of CNGI, and made clear points that the core networks projects were managed and coordinated by Chinese Academy of Engineering. Network Center of China Education and Research , China Telecom , China Unicom , China Netcom/CSTNET, China Mobile and China Railcom are the constructing entities.
Six nationwide network backbones and 39 GigaPOPs composing the CNGI backbones covering at least 20 major cities of China .
Two exchange points (IX) in Beijing and Shanghai for the interconnection of the 6 network backbones and international connections.
Over 300 campus networks.
One academic network and five top carriers in China are playing major roles in the implementation. The only one academic network, CERNET (universities) is responsible for construction of the only one network backbone that is for scientific and educational purposes. The carriers take charge for construction of five network backbones with the object of commercial application research. |
